This experiment addresses the long-term effect of active immunization of goats against a recombinant ovine inhibin alpha subunit (roIHN-alpha). In late anestrus 100 mu g of roINH-alpha was administered to 40 pluriparous Boer goat does, followed, 4 weeks later, by a booster injection. Weekly blood samples were drawn to monitor the inhibin binding capacity with the aid of a radio-tracer binding assay. From the onset until 48 h after the end of each estrus, follicular development and ovulation rate were monitored at 24 h intervals by transrectal ultrasonography. Beginning in August and continuing into January, does were mated at every other estrus, and submitted to transcervical embryo collection. Seven months after the first immunization, the does were mated again and permitted to carry to term. All immunized does produced inhibin antibodies, an elevated titre being first detected 2 weeks after primary immunization. Maximum titres were reached after 6 weeks, i.e. 2 weeks after the booster injection. Thereafter, in the course of the following 32 weeks, the titre subsided gradually. The does started cycling by mid-August. At that stage the average number of follicles more than 4 mm in diameter, ovulations and total embryos and ova recovered were 14.7 (+/- 2.3), 5.3 (+/- 0.7) and 4.4 (+/- 1.0), respectively. A steady decline followed and in January the corresponding means were: 5.2 (+/- 0.6) follicles, 3.1 (+/- 0.6) ovulations and 1.2 (+/- 0.4) embryos and ova recovered. When mated toward the end of the breeding season, 85% of the does became pregnant to the first mating and 73% went to term. Healthy kids were born, the average litter size being 2.2 (+/- 0.1). In conclusion, immunization of goats against a recombinant inhibin alpha-subunit proved to be a practicable means of producing embryos for transfer purposes. After about half a year, when the inhibin antibody titre has subsided, it is possible to return the does to the breeding flock without risking complications with normal breeding activity. In this work a method for building multiple-model structures is presented. A clustering algorithm that uses data from the system is employed to define the architecture of the multiple-model, including the size of the region covered by each model, and the number of models. A heating ventilation and air conditioning system is used as a testbed of the proposed method.

When water is coadsorbed with oxygen at coverages above 0.25ML an intact water species is observed in high resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy up to 220 K, which is significantly more stable than intact water on the clean surface. The presence of this species causes a shift in the O 1s binding energy of the pre-adsorbed oxygen, which indicates the formation of hydrogen bonds between the two adsorbates. Low coverages of oxygen induce partial dissociation and recombinative desorption in the same temperature range, which illustrates that desorption temperatures alone cannot be used to determine whether water is molecularly intact or not.

The surface geometries of the p (root7- x root7)R19degrees-(4CO) and c(2 x 4)-(2CO) layers on Ni {111} and the clean Ni {111} surface were determined by low energy electron diffraction structure analysis. For the clean surface small but significant contractions of d(12) and d(23) (both 2.02 Angstrom) were found with respect to the bulk interlayer distance (2.03 Angstrom). In the c(2 x 4)-(2CO) structure these distances are expanded, with values of d(12) = 2.08 Angstrom and d(23) = 2.06 Angstrom and buckling of 0.08 and 0.02 Angstrom, respectively, in the first and second layer. CO resides near hcp and fcc hollow sites with relatively large lateral shifts away from the ideal positions leading to unequal C-Ni bond lengths between 1.76 and 1.99 Angstrom. For the p(root7- x root7-)R19'-(4CO) layer two best fit geometries were found, which agree in most of their atomic positions, except for one out of four CO molecules, which is either near atop or between bridge and atop. The remaining three molecules reside near hcp and fcc sites, again with large lateral deviations from their ideal positions. The average C Ni bond length for these molecules is, however, the same as for CO on hollow sites at low coverage. The average CNi bond length at hollow sites, the interlayer distances, and buckling in the first Ni layer are similar to the c(2 x 4)(2CO) geometry, only the buckling in the second layer (0.08 Angstrom) is significantly larger. Lateral and vertical shifts of the Ni atoms in the first layer lead to unsymmetric environments for the CO molecules, which can be regarded as an imprint of the chiral p(root7- x root7-)R19degrees lattice geometry onto the substrate.

The adsorption of carbon monoxide on the Pt{110} surface at coverages of 0.5 ML and 1.0 ML was investigated using quantitative low-energy electron diffraction (LEED IV) and density-functional theory (DFT). At 0.5 ML CO lifts the reconstruction of the clean surface but does not form an ordered overlayer. At the saturation coverage, 1.0 ML, a well-ordered p(2×1) superstructure with glide line symmetry is formed. It was confirmed that the CO molecules adsorb on top of the Pt atoms in the top-most substrate layer with the molecular axes tilted by ±22° with respect to the surface normal in alternating directions away from the close packed rows of Pt atoms. This is accompanied by significant lateral shifts of 0.55 Å away from the atop sites in the same direction as the tilt. The top-most substrate layer relaxes inwards by −4% with respect to the bulk-terminated atom positions, while the consecutive layers only show minor relaxations. Despite the lack of long-range order in the 0.5 ML CO layer it was possible to determine key structural parameters by LEED IV using only the intensities of the integer-order spots. At this coverage CO also adsorbs on atop sites with the molecular axis closer to the surface normal (b10°). The average substrate relaxations in each layer are similar for both coverages and consistent with DFT calculations performed for a variety of ordered structures with coverages of 1.0 ML and 0.5 ML.

The hemagglutinins (HAs) of human H1 and H3 influenza viruses and avian H5 influenza virus were produced as recombinant fusion proteins with the human immunoglobulin Fc domain. Recombinant HA-human immunoglobulin Fc domain (HA-HuFc) proteins were secreted from baculovirus-infected insect cells as glycosylated oligomer HAs of the anticipated molecular mass, agglutinated red blood cells, were purified on protein A, and were used to immunize mice in the absence of adjuvant. Immunogenicity was demonstrated for all subtypes, with the serum samples demonstrating subtype-specific hemagglutination inhibition, epitope specificity similar to that seen with virus infection, and neutralization. HuFc-tagged HAs are potential candidates for gene-to-vaccine approaches to influenza vaccination.

The IPD Annual Index is the largest and most comprehensive Real Estate market index available in the UK Such coverage however inevitably leads to delays in publication. In contrast there are a number of quarterly and monthly indices which are published within days of the year end but which lack the coverage in terms of size and numbers of properties. This paper analyses these smaller but more timely indices to see whether such indices can be used to predict the performance of the IPD Annual Index. Using a number of measures of forecasting accuracy it is shown that the smaller indices provide unbiased and efficient predictions of the IPD Annual Index. Such indices also significantly outperform a naive no-change model. Although no one index performs significantly better than the others. The more timely indices however do not perfectly track the IPD Annual Index. As a result any short run predictions of performance will be subject to a degree of error. Nevertheless the more timely indices, although lacking authoritative coverage, provide a valuable service to investors giving good estimates of Real Estates performance well before the publication of the IPD Annual Index.

The grass-free lawn is a novel development in modern ornamental horticulture where the traditional monoculture of grass is replaced by a variety of mowing-tolerant clonal forbs. It brings floral aesthetics and a diverse species approach to the use of lawn space. How the number of constituent forb species affects the aesthetic and structural performance of grass-free lawns was investigated using grass-free lawns composed of four, six and twelve British native clonal perennial forb species. Lawn productivity was seen to increase with increasing species number but the relationship was not linear. Plant cover was dynamic in all lawn types, varied between years and was not representative of individual species' floral performance. The behaviour of component species common to all lawns suggested that lawns with 12 species show greater structural stability than the lawns with a lower species number. Visual performance in lawns with the greatest species number was lower than in lawns with fewer species, with increasing variety in floral size and individual species floral productivity leading to a trade-off between diversity and floral performance. Individual species were seen to have different aesthetic functions in grass-free lawns either by providing flowers, ground coverage or both.

We have used low-temperature STM, together with DFT calculations incorporating the effects of dispersion forces, to study from a structural point of view the interaction of NO2 with Au{111} surfaces. NO2 adsorbs molecularly on Au{111} at 80 K, initially as small, disordered clusters at the elbows of the type-x reconstruction lines of the clean-surface herringbone reconstruction, and then as larger, ordered islands on the fcc regions. Within the islands, the NO2 molecules define a (√3 × 2)rect. superlattice, for which we evaluate structural models. By around 0.25 ML coverage, the herringbone reconstruction has been lifted, accompanied by the formation of Au nanoclusters, and the islands have coalesced. At this stage, essentially the whole surface is covered with an overlayer consisting predominantly of domains of the (√3 × 2)rect. structure, but also containing less wellordered regions. With further exposure, the degree of disorder in the overlayer increases; saturation occurs close to 0.43 ML.

Sea surface temperature (SST) data are often provided as gridded products, typically at resolutions of order 0.05 degrees from satellite observations to reduce data volume at the request of data users and facilitate comparison against other products or models. Sampling uncertainty is introduced in gridded products where the full surface area of the ocean within a grid cell cannot be fully observed because of cloud cover. In this paper we parameterise uncertainties in SST as a function of the percentage of clear-sky pixels available and the SST variability in that subsample. This parameterisation is developed from Advanced Along Track Scanning Radiometer (AATSR) data, but is applicable to all gridded L3U SST products at resolutions of 0.05-0.1 degrees, irrespective of instrument and retrieval algorithm, provided that instrument noise propagated into the SST is accounted for. We also calculate the sampling uncertainty of ~0.04 K in Global Area Coverage (GAC) Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) products, using related methods.
